Cheryl Cole got a bum deal with her English rose tattoo

What a mess Cheryl Cole’s latest tattoo is. I’m not commenting on the artistic merit or otherwise of the enormous “English rose” blooms covering the space between the singer’s lower back and upper thighs, but the fuss. A few flowers are never going to rank on a horror tat chart that includes a battered female face

Following 15 hours’ work over eight months, the California-based tattooist Nikko Hurtado, who charges £250 an hour, posted the image of his work/Cole’s backside on Instagram over the weekend. Cue horror over the design, its size, what it means about Cole’s state of mind (a cry for help?). By Sunday, it (the art/backside) was the Sun newspaper’s splash with a strapline announcing: “Star’s shocking new look”. (We should leave to one side the thorny question of whether a pattern on your bum is a “look”.) The former Girls Aloud singer reacted to the online criticism by saying: “People are entitled to their own opinion. Personally, I’ve never really concerned myself with other people’s body parts!”

And she’s right, tattoos do not turn bodies into public property even when they’re female. I’ve never liked tattoos – the permanence when life is anything but, the pain, the chance for misspelling – but I have some sympathy with those who see tats as a feminist issue, a way of saying “it’s my body and I’ll do what I want to it”. A post for Vagendapointed out: “You can get a huge amount of stick for ‘spoiling’ your body with a tattoo or four because you have ‘disfigured’ something that is actually a public commodity DIDN’TCHA KNOW.”

But if it is wrong for a tattoo to make a woman public property, what happens when that woman is a public figure – OK, a celebrity? Websites such as discuss the artistic merit and meaning of a celebrity’s tattoos. But are they simply pointing out that the Sanskrit prayer running down Rihanna’s hip would have read “forgiveness, honesty, suppression, and control” before it was misspelt, or are they more popular for showing us revealing glimpses of her body? A bit of both, surely.

Cole is unlikely to be showing her latest tattoo that frequently. Yet now thousands of us, including the Guardian, are commenting on it. You see the mess it makes? Still, on the bright side some pink roses are going to cause less head-smacking anguish than inking “Mrs Cole” on your butt.

Prison Break Tattoo guy Wentworth Miller disclosed he is gay.

Actor Wentworth Miller came out in a letter to a Russian Film Festival saying as a gay man he coudn’t attend knowing how they treated gay people in their country.

The actor and screenwriter tattoo guy Wentworth Miller, the star of US drama Prison Break, has publicly disclosed he is gay in a letter declining an invitation to be a guest of honour at the St Petersburg international film festival in protest against Russia’s recently adopted anti-gay laws.

In his letter Miller, 41, who starred in the Fox show, wrote: “As someone who has enjoyed visiting Russia in the past and can also claim a degree of Russian ancestry, it would make me happy to say yes. However, as I gay man, I must decline.

The letter was written to the film festival’s director, Maria Averbach, and was posted on the GLAAD website, which monitors media representation of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people and issues.

The actor and producer, who was born in Britain, added: “I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government. The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly.

“Perhaps, when and if circumstances improve, I’ll be free to make a different choice. Until then. Wentworth Miller.”

Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, signed a law in July banning the adoption of Russian-born children by gay couples. In June another bill classified “homosexual propaganda” as pornography, with fines and arrests for those making it accessible to minors. Last year a law was passed banning gay pride events in Moscow for the next 100 years.

The Russian laws have triggered protests in the US, with activists pouring Russian vodka in the streets. The laws have also caused concern among some athletes heading to Russia for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games and there have been protests by sportsmen and woman.

David Cameron is under pressure from activists to raise the issue with Putin during the G20 summit in September.

The prime minister recently met Stephen Fry after the comedian and presenter called for a boycott of the Sochi Games, comparing the situation to the decision to hold the 1936 Olympics in Nazi Germany. Fry’s call received public support from the actor Rupert Everett.

Russia has reacted defensively to the public pressure over its new laws, with its sports minister, Vitaly Mutko, claiming it was an “invented problem” whipped up by western media.

Miller, who played incarcerated structural engineer Michael Scofield in Prison Break from 2005 to 2009, wrote the script for the film Stoker, starring Nicole Kidman and directed by Park Chan-wook.

GLAAD spokesman Wilson Cruz said: “Wentworth’s bold show of support sends a powerful message to LGBT Russians, who are facing extreme violence and persecution: you are not alone. ”

He added: “As people from across the globe continue to speak out against Russia’s horrific law, more celebrities and corporations should follow his courageous lead in openly condemning Russia’s anti-LGBT law.”

Justin Bieber becomes an illegal tattoo artist

– news from

It’s no secret that Justin Bieber is a big fan of tattoos — the evidence of the pop star’s passion for ink is clearly visible in the various works of art that adorn his body. However, according to an April 4 report by Perez Hilton, Justin has taken his love of tats to the next level by actually trying to become a tattoo artist himself.

Famous New York tattoo artist Bang Bang allowed Justin to try his hand at tattooing by offering up a spot of skin on his leg for the Biebs to scribble on. In a video of the process, Justin can be see concentrating hard on his work of body art — a muscular cartoon mouse named “Swaggy.” The artwork actually turned out looking sort of adorable even though it was a bit squiggly, so if Justin decides that he needs to take a break from the spotlight, he could always consider honing his skills by taking part in some tattoo art training. It’s a skill that comes in handy if one ever finds themselves in jail.

Perhaps Justin wanted to learn how to use a tattoo kit because he’s planning on inking himself. He wouldn’t be the first pop star to do so — One Direction singer Harry Styles reportedly bought a tattoo kit so that he and his friends can ink each other. Of course this isn’t the best idea since sharing a tattoo needle can spread diseases, and it’s illegal to tattoo without a license. In fact, Bang Bang’s tattoo parlor could face a fine up to $2,000 for letting Justin tattoo the artist. However, Bang Bang doesn’t seem to mind getting in trouble for illegal ink — he’s also let celebrities like Rihanna and Katy Perry create works of art on his body. So instead of collecting autographs, Bang Bang collects tattoos from the stars.

Justin Bieber should at least be relieved that he’s not the one in trouble this time, and his monkey named Mally should be relieved that she didn’t turn into a test subject for Justin’s tattoo skills. So do you think that Justin is a promising tattoo artist, or should he stick to singing?

Worst tattoo ever is finally fixed

The world’s worst tattoo: before and after

The man with the “world’s worst portrait tattoo” finally got his happy ending on Thursday when he had the opportunity to fix the botched ink job of his late wife that had plagued him for so many years.

In 2007, on the one-year anniversary of his wife Mindy’s death, Chad Stahl, 38, owner of Cutright Lawn and Landscaping, LLC, visited On the Edge Tattoo Studio in Bowling Green, Ohio to honour her with a portrait tattoo. The couple had been dating for 10 years, had three children, and were married for less than 3 months when Mindy died in a household fire.

Tattoo artist Dennis Foust inked the $450 portrait tattoo. “I had seen Faust’s portrait work on his website and he even tattooed some of my in-laws with designs in honour of Mindy so I was confident going in,” Stahl told Yahoo! Shine in his first media interview. “But when the swelling subsided, it didn’t look like Mindy at all — her teeth looked evil.”

To add insult to injury, a friend had emailed him a link to a blog post titled “Worst Tattoo Ever” with a photo of Stahl’s tattoo posted by a disgruntled On the Edge ex-employee. A few months later, Stahl returned to the studio and Faust tried to fix it, adding the words, “In loving memory of Mindy” but the damage was too great. “I was embarrassed to wear sleeveless shirts and didn’t want anyone to see the tattoo but everyone in my town knew about it,” says Stahl.

Foust told Shine: “This was my very first portrait tattoo done years ago. I’ve since moved forward, improved my skills, and my work has been featured in magazines.”

Recently, a friend of Stahl’s recommended that he visit Scott Versago at Empire Ink in Akron, Ohio, who had heard of the infamous tattoo and on Thursday Versago fixed it — for free. Vergaso wrote on his Facebook page that he got to tackle the official ‘#1 worst portrait tattoo in the world’.

“I’m sure you’ve all seen it a million times online, as had I,” he wrote. “I couldn’t believe my eyes when this guy walked in and showed me this project. I think my jaw literally hit the floor. He went on to tell me the story behind the portrait; He had just married his beautiful wife and not even three months afterwards she was killed in a horrible house fire accident leaving him to raise their three children alone. Shortly after he went to a local tattoo studio to memorialise his wife and was left with this abomination. He later returned to that studio for one more session, thinking that perhaps ‘he had done something wrong in the healing of the tattoo’ and they butchered it even more the second time. Finally, he drove all the way to my studio, Empire Ink, just to meet me and to see what his options were. Touched by his story, I gifted the entire project to him for free. Now he has closure and I have an amazing story to add to my portfolio!”

The fix-it job took just three hours. “I’m so happy and want everyone to see it,” Stahl told Shine. “I’m going to enter the tattoo in a contest hosted by On the Edge to see if they recognize me.”

And just when we thought there probably couldn’t be any more this year Justin Bieber goes and shows off his latest.

Scarlett Johansson’s new Tattoo

Scarlett Johansson has revealed her newest tattoo, a horseshoe with the words “Lucky You” around it, created by French artist Fuzi UVTPK. This is the fourth (or so we think given celebs’ penchant for hiding them in various places) for the 27-year-old actress.
