Cheryl Cole got a bum deal with her English rose tattoo

What a mess Cheryl Cole’s latest tattoo is. I’m not commenting on the artistic merit or otherwise of the enormous “English rose” blooms covering the space between the singer’s lower back and upper thighs, but the fuss. A few flowers are never going to rank on a horror tat chart that includes a battered female face

Following 15 hours’ work over eight months, the California-based tattooist Nikko Hurtado, who charges £250 an hour, posted the image of his work/Cole’s backside on Instagram over the weekend. Cue horror over the design, its size, what it means about Cole’s state of mind (a cry for help?). By Sunday, it (the art/backside) was the Sun newspaper’s splash with a strapline announcing: “Star’s shocking new look”. (We should leave to one side the thorny question of whether a pattern on your bum is a “look”.) The former Girls Aloud singer reacted to the online criticism by saying: “People are entitled to their own opinion. Personally, I’ve never really concerned myself with other people’s body parts!”

And she’s right, tattoos do not turn bodies into public property even when they’re female. I’ve never liked tattoos – the permanence when life is anything but, the pain, the chance for misspelling – but I have some sympathy with those who see tats as a feminist issue, a way of saying “it’s my body and I’ll do what I want to it”. A post for Vagendapointed out: “You can get a huge amount of stick for ‘spoiling’ your body with a tattoo or four because you have ‘disfigured’ something that is actually a public commodity DIDN’TCHA KNOW.”

But if it is wrong for a tattoo to make a woman public property, what happens when that woman is a public figure – OK, a celebrity? Websites such as discuss the artistic merit and meaning of a celebrity’s tattoos. But are they simply pointing out that the Sanskrit prayer running down Rihanna’s hip would have read “forgiveness, honesty, suppression, and control” before it was misspelt, or are they more popular for showing us revealing glimpses of her body? A bit of both, surely.

Cole is unlikely to be showing her latest tattoo that frequently. Yet now thousands of us, including the Guardian, are commenting on it. You see the mess it makes? Still, on the bright side some pink roses are going to cause less head-smacking anguish than inking “Mrs Cole” on your butt.

Prison Break Tattoo guy Wentworth Miller disclosed he is gay.

Actor Wentworth Miller came out in a letter to a Russian Film Festival saying as a gay man he coudn’t attend knowing how they treated gay people in their country.

The actor and screenwriter tattoo guy Wentworth Miller, the star of US drama Prison Break, has publicly disclosed he is gay in a letter declining an invitation to be a guest of honour at the St Petersburg international film festival in protest against Russia’s recently adopted anti-gay laws.

In his letter Miller, 41, who starred in the Fox show, wrote: “As someone who has enjoyed visiting Russia in the past and can also claim a degree of Russian ancestry, it would make me happy to say yes. However, as I gay man, I must decline.

The letter was written to the film festival’s director, Maria Averbach, and was posted on the GLAAD website, which monitors media representation of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people and issues.

The actor and producer, who was born in Britain, added: “I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government. The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly.

“Perhaps, when and if circumstances improve, I’ll be free to make a different choice. Until then. Wentworth Miller.”

Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, signed a law in July banning the adoption of Russian-born children by gay couples. In June another bill classified “homosexual propaganda” as pornography, with fines and arrests for those making it accessible to minors. Last year a law was passed banning gay pride events in Moscow for the next 100 years.

The Russian laws have triggered protests in the US, with activists pouring Russian vodka in the streets. The laws have also caused concern among some athletes heading to Russia for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games and there have been protests by sportsmen and woman.

David Cameron is under pressure from activists to raise the issue with Putin during the G20 summit in September.

The prime minister recently met Stephen Fry after the comedian and presenter called for a boycott of the Sochi Games, comparing the situation to the decision to hold the 1936 Olympics in Nazi Germany. Fry’s call received public support from the actor Rupert Everett.

Russia has reacted defensively to the public pressure over its new laws, with its sports minister, Vitaly Mutko, claiming it was an “invented problem” whipped up by western media.

Miller, who played incarcerated structural engineer Michael Scofield in Prison Break from 2005 to 2009, wrote the script for the film Stoker, starring Nicole Kidman and directed by Park Chan-wook.

GLAAD spokesman Wilson Cruz said: “Wentworth’s bold show of support sends a powerful message to LGBT Russians, who are facing extreme violence and persecution: you are not alone. ”

He added: “As people from across the globe continue to speak out against Russia’s horrific law, more celebrities and corporations should follow his courageous lead in openly condemning Russia’s anti-LGBT law.”

Justin Bieber becomes an illegal tattoo artist

– news from

It’s no secret that Justin Bieber is a big fan of tattoos — the evidence of the pop star’s passion for ink is clearly visible in the various works of art that adorn his body. However, according to an April 4 report by Perez Hilton, Justin has taken his love of tats to the next level by actually trying to become a tattoo artist himself.

Famous New York tattoo artist Bang Bang allowed Justin to try his hand at tattooing by offering up a spot of skin on his leg for the Biebs to scribble on. In a video of the process, Justin can be see concentrating hard on his work of body art — a muscular cartoon mouse named “Swaggy.” The artwork actually turned out looking sort of adorable even though it was a bit squiggly, so if Justin decides that he needs to take a break from the spotlight, he could always consider honing his skills by taking part in some tattoo art training. It’s a skill that comes in handy if one ever finds themselves in jail.

Perhaps Justin wanted to learn how to use a tattoo kit because he’s planning on inking himself. He wouldn’t be the first pop star to do so — One Direction singer Harry Styles reportedly bought a tattoo kit so that he and his friends can ink each other. Of course this isn’t the best idea since sharing a tattoo needle can spread diseases, and it’s illegal to tattoo without a license. In fact, Bang Bang’s tattoo parlor could face a fine up to $2,000 for letting Justin tattoo the artist. However, Bang Bang doesn’t seem to mind getting in trouble for illegal ink — he’s also let celebrities like Rihanna and Katy Perry create works of art on his body. So instead of collecting autographs, Bang Bang collects tattoos from the stars.

Justin Bieber should at least be relieved that he’s not the one in trouble this time, and his monkey named Mally should be relieved that she didn’t turn into a test subject for Justin’s tattoo skills. So do you think that Justin is a promising tattoo artist, or should he stick to singing?

Drew Barrymore ‘removing tattoos, converting to Judaism

Drew Barrymore is reportedly having her tattoos removed so that she can convert to Judaism.

Barrymore – who married art consultant Will Kopelman last June – is said to have already begun treatment as she plans to raise their daughter Olive in the Jewish faith.

The actress is apparently undergoing laser removal so that she can be buried in a traditional Jewish cemetery.

The Jewish holy book, the Torah, bans body art and states: “You shall not make gashes in your flesh for the dead, or incise any marks on yourselves.”

Barrymore is said to have six tattoos, which include a butterfly on her stomach, a pair of angels on her lower back and a cross on her leg.

A source also told America’s Star (via Now) that Barrymore’s maturity may have influenced her decision to remove her body art.

“Drew also wants to be a Santa Barbara mum, and tattoos clash with that wardrobe,” they explained.

“She’s growing up, turning conservative.”

Drew has a reported six tattoos on her body currently – but she does not rule out the possibility of getting more. While most people know about five of her tattoos, one of them is a name tattoo that is not often talked of – it is the name of her former boyfriend James Walters, underneath a guardian angel. Nevertheless, six tattoos were enough to get Drew a number three ranking on Vanishing Tattoo’s list of the top 10 women with tats. Drew’s butterfly is her most famous tat.

Barrymore’s tattoos include:
Hip – Drew’s hip tattoo is of a bouquet of flowers, on her left side.
Stomach – The tattoo on Drew’s stomach is of a butterfly, and it is perhaps her most well known tattoo. Done in simple black, it helps to accentuate her curves.
Toe – The smallest of Drew Barrymore’s tattoos is on her toe, a small black crescent moon.
Lower Right Leg – Cross tattoos are extremely popular, and Drew’s version is unique – it is a cross done in a very stylized way, along with vines surrounding the image.
Lower Back – this is the location of two angels – one with Drew’s mother’s name, “Jaid”, and one with her former boyfriend’s name

NFL Star Colin Kaepernick New Tribal Tattoo

Colin Kaepernick just started his offseason, and he is not wasting any time adding to his tattoos.

Kaepernick tweeted the photo you see above on Thursday. The San Francisco 49ers quarterback added a tribal design around his pectorals and trapezius. The photo below via tattoo artist Orly Locquiao shows what designs were added:

Ater leading his San Francisco 49ers to within 5 yards of a championship, Colin Kaepernick was back under the needle Wednesday night, getting a tribal tattoo added to the large, script words he already had inked on his upper chest.

Kaepernick’s “Against All Odds” tattoo is now surrounded by a tribal design that Orly Locquiao, the tattoo’s artist, says represents “family, inner strength, spiritual growth and humility.”

Are these tattoo merit badges? I guess later ones will deal with mental toughness, resilience, love, conquering and not being afraid of the dark inside a large domed stadium.

The ink looks nice, if that’s your sort of thing. We want to know know whether Kaepernick was going to get the same tattoo no matter the result of Sunday’s game or if he had dueling designs, like when presidential candidates have to write victory and concession speeches.

Worst Celebrity Tattoos

But who has the absolute worst celebrity tattoos? Let’s needle through the worst tattoo inspiration borne in the seedy shops of the Sunset boulevard.

You be the judge .

Celebrity Tattoo Cover Ups

While tattoos are a hot fashion accessory some are soon thought to be mistakes and then you have to decide on how to cover them up. Celebrities have become quite good at changing their tattoos on a whim.

The most well known female celeb that has had to cover up a tattoo design (actually more than one!) is Angelina Jolie. The most well-known male celeb that has had to cover up a tattoo design is Johnny Depp.

Let’s have a look at celebrities that we know off who have had to cover up earlier tattoos and see if we can learn from their public mistakes.

Unfortunately this never seems more so than in Hollywood and so you’d think celebrities would stop tattooing their latest love’s name onto their bodies and yet they continue and have to end up covering the tattoo up or trying laser removal. The first celeb that I remember having this problem (although I’m sure someone can think of earlier cases!) is Johnny Depp.

Johnny Depp Cover UpTattoo
Back in the early 1990s Johnny Depp was engaged to Winona Ryder and got her name loving tattooed on his right arm – it read Winona Forever. After nearly four years their relationship was over, but Depp didn’t really want to have the tattoo removed. As he said in an interview in GQ “I think of my tattoos like a journal to have it removed, or erase it, is to try and say it never happened. If I alter it in some way, make it funny – put her next boyfriend’s name on top of it, say – it would still be honest.”

So what did Johnny do? He went the funny route by changing it to read Wino Forever!

Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie has also had to cover up tattoos because of bad romances, but she’s also had tattoos removed because they just don’t relay the message she wants any more or because she quite simply has changed her mind.

Angelina does offer some sound advice to people considering getting a loved one’s name tattooed onto their body however.

“I’ll never be stupid enough to have a man’s name tattooed on me again”

Unfortunately it appears that she quickly forgot that advice herself and has since had a tattoo put on her body to represent Brad Pitt!

Angelina Jolie’s Tattoo Cover Ups

Angelina has had many of her tattoos covered up including her very first tattoo which was a Japanese kanji for the word ‘Death.’ It seems strange to get this tattooed onto your body, but according to Angelina it was a way of reminding herself to live her life to the fullest – this is the same actress that used to carry a vial of her ex’s blood around her neck, so it’s easy to understand in that context.

When Angelina adopted her first child – son Maddox – she no longer needed a tattoo to remind herself to live life to the fullest so she had the tattoo covered up with an ancient Khmer script.

Don’t Tattoo Drunk!

When you’ve been drinking things appear like a great idea when they really are not and I know of a few people who have ended up with tattoos they regret – Angelina Jolie has also had this experience.

While Angelina was in Amsterdam she got drunk and had a blue tongue dragon tattoo put on her stomach. She covered this small tattoo with a large black cross tattoo.

Angelina has also had a small blue window tattoo on her lower back which looked a little like the rectangle window on Play School and was said to represent her outlook on life. When she had her large Bengal Tiger tattoo put onto her back it’s tail covered up this tattoo.

Not all of Angelina’s tattoo ‘mistakes’ have been covered over – she’s had two of them removed by laser. Both of these two are ones she had done when she was married to Billy Bob Thornton.

She had a tattoo on her left arm that read Billy Bob and this was removed when they were divorced. Angelina also had a black dragon tattoo on her left arm that was thought to represent Billy Bob, this one didn’t get removed until she adopted Maddox. She had it removed by laser and the area has since been tattooed with the co-ordinates of the birthplaces of each of her children, as well as more recently Brad Pitt’s birthplace co-ordinates.

Lady Gaga’s Tattoo Cover Up

Lady Gaga is well known for both her costumes and her growing collection of tattoos however her first tattoo can’t be seen anymore as she’s had it covered up!

When Lady Gaga was only 17 and still going by the name she was christened with she got hold of a fake id and got her first tattoo – a treble clef. For a musician it seems quite appropriate to get a treble clef tattoo getting that tattoo on you back hip seems fine, Lady Gaga however decided that it wasn’t something she wanted to keep.

What to do with an unwanted tattoo? Cover it up with a different one of course! Lady Gaga had a mixture of intertwining vines and roses tattooed on her back and waist which are easily seen in some of her music videos, especially the Bad Romance music video.

There are so many other celebrity tattoo cover ups around that it’s hard to name them all, but feel free to add one’s that you think are worth mentioning here –
